The Bombay to Goa, last leg of the Rally will be flagged off by the Hon. Minister of Tourism of Maharashtra, Mr Vijay Kumar Gavit today, the 26th of April 2010. The itinerary will see the sailors sampling the visual treat of the splendid Kulaba – Konkan coast, replete with historical forts, islands and virgin beaches. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has thrown in its mite to showcase this golden heritage and have facilitated a halt for the yachts at the famed Jaigarh fort. The foreign yachts will sail on later to Cochin where they will shelter for the duration of the monsoons.
According to Gautama Dutta, “The event will introduce the Indians to the joys of adventure at sea and familiarize them to the world of yachts and yachting, a leisure sport that has the potential of being enjoyed by many more sea loving, sporty masses.
This event will give a huge boost to the emerging leisure boating industry in India”. Apart from the MTDC and the Government of Maharashtra, the event has the support of the Mumbai Port Trust, the Maharashtra Maritime Board, the Tourism Department of Goa, the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard who will be providing ‘Search and Rescue’ cover. There is little doubt that a yacht race of this stature will serve to showcase the historically significant and pristine western coast of India to the world and attract yachts from all over the world. Yacht tourism, which so huge in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and so many exotic locations all over the world, is surely inching India’s way. A lot of ‘old salts’ at the Yacht Club are sure to nod their heads in approval to hear about this.

”We also want to highlight to the Governments of Maharashtra and Goa that there is a crying need to develop proper yachting infrastructure like marinas in order to realise the tremendous potential of the coastline of India as an international yachting destination”, adds Simon Arrol, Director Marina India.

The passage to Mumbai has seen adventurous yachtsmen sail from Turkey to Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Yemen and Oman. 26 international sailing yachts set off from Alanya Marina in Turkey on 10th October 2009 with their sights set on India. The yachts varying in size from 9 metres to 17 metres from Holland France, USA, Italy, UK, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and France have covered a total of 5,266 nautical miles and are now at their mooring off the Royal Bombay Yacht Club as part of the Vasco Da Rally 2009-10.

Identifying Fishes For Your Aquarium Tank
Monday, May 31st, 2010So, you’ve gotten your aquarium setup. Or you’re all ready to setup your fish tank, and you want a whole host of swimming, content freshwater fish to fill your aquarium acrylic tank, right? Well, relax and decide exactly what type of fish you need in there.
Maybe you would like a few which are very energetic, so they’re constantly moving and interesting you. Or possibly you’re keen on individuals with vivid, radiant shades. Or maybe you would like something different completely.
In whatever way you look at it, you’re going to need fish for your glass or aquarium acrylic tank. Choosing the kind of fish that you want can take some time, specifically if you are planning on owning several varieties alongside one another.
Make sure to study ahead of purchasing anything, simply because you risk fish loss and ultimate death if you do not!
Research: Not All That Difficult
Employees at a fish supply store will be able to inform you a lot regarding what you need to keep your prospective fishes happy and strong inside their fish tank, and also you might discover that they’re far more well-informed than you previously expected. There are many different questions to think about, including:
- Does this kind of fish like wide open places, or plenty of plants?
- Does this particular fish prefer alkaline or acidic water (Lower pH verses higher pH)?
- Does this fish get along with others?
- Do you know the feeding requirements for this fish? Will they eat at the top of the aquarium, or the bottom?
- How much space will this particular fish need?
- Exactly what temperatures does this particular fish thrive in?
This is important and often ignored…
If you would like more than one kinds of fish in your aquarium acrylic tank, try to match these as carefully as you possibly can. You wouldn’t want them eating each other, would you? There are many books on what fish are compatible with other fish and the subject is too involved to reveal here, but this issue isimportant for a successful aquarium.
Good luck on your new aquarium. The aquarium will give you many years of peace and tranquility.
Can the otocinclus catfish handle a little bit of salt?
Monday, May 31st, 2010I read today that algae eaters can’t handle salt. The statement sounds vague, but I don’t want anything to happen to my otocinclus catfish. I have mollies so I put just a little bit of salt into my tank. Is this going to kill my catfish off?

What to do in Goa
Sunday, May 30th, 2010Goa is India’s littlest state by area and the 4th smallest by population. Located on the west coast of India in the region known as the Konkan, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and by Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its westerly coast
In Goa the cities most know for boats charters and for Luxury yacht rentals are:
Panjim
Panjim which means “the land that does not flood” is the state capital of Goa and is approx 30 Km south of Terekhol. Once a nondescript fishing village, Panjim started to gain prominence during the second half of the 18th century when the erstwhile power center of Old Goa gradually weakened into oblivion.
Unlike many capital cities, Panjim has a distinct unhurried character. As the state capital, Panjim figuresconspicuously in Goa’s tourism scenario. It houses some of the prominent government offices and educational institutions. It is placed on the southern banks of the Mandovi River, which makes this town all the moremagical. Typical of a Goan town, Panjim is built around a church facing a prominent square. The town has some beautiful Portuguese Baroque style buildings and enthralling old villas. The riverside, speckled with brightly whitewashed houses with wrought iron balconies, offers a fine view. Take any mid sized Portuguese town add a scattering of banana trees and auto-rickshaws, dowse annually with torrential tropical rain, and leave to simmer in fierce humid sunshine for at least one hundred and fifty years, and one will end up with something like Panjim. The Goan capital has a completely different feel from any other Indian city. From Panjim one can visit many of the famous restaurants and nighttime clubs in the North of Goa, which have made Goa the Ibiza of the East.
Betul
The village of Betul is a traditional fishing village approx 30 miles south of Panjim . There is a small beach located on the southern end of the Sal river as it opens into the Arabian sea along the south Goa coastline. The jetty in Betul is a good place to observe the bustle andhustle of Betul’s routine life. Colourful boats filled with coir and fishes, and busy fisherfolk turned out in vibrant colours, make this a truly interesting experience. Betul also has the awe-inspiring Leela Beach Resort, which has an artificial lagoon. From Betul one can visit the Agonda and Palolem beaches in South Goa and the famous Cabo de Rama fort.
Betul is also an important fishing port as all the deep sea trawlers and fishing boats bring in their catch here. There are boats on hire and regular ferries that take you across from Mobor . It is a famous beach of south Goa known for the cheap and fresh seafood supply. Here one can find some of the top mussels of Goa.
There are a dozen nice restaurant that also serves delicious river fish dishes. The secluded beach here that is shaded by fruit trees and coconut palms makes it quite picturesque.

Thinking of a Vacation to Yellowstone
Sunday, May 30th, 2010Are you considering a Vacation to Yellowstone ? Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your trip .
Deciding what to do
Yellowstone National Park is a incredibly large place. The park encompases 3,472 square miles (or 2,219,789 square acres). It is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined.
Because it is so large , it is crucial that you choose what you would like to do before you start your trip. One good way to learn your options is to buy or rent a Yellowstone DVD when you are doing your research . The DVDs can give you several good ideas about what to do, and where to visit, and might show you some places that you won’t have the opportunity to visit while you are there . Once you know these things, you can start planning your itinerary.
Lodging and Camping options
There is a lodging option for everyone in Yellowstone. You can “rough it” in the back country, Stay in a tent in an organized camp ground, stay in a hotel such as the Old Faithful Inn, or stay in a condominium in the city of West Yellowstone.
One lodging option that more and more people are choosing is an Island Park Rental Cabin. Island Park is located about 20 miles from the west entrance to the park, and for the same price as many hotel rooms, you can rent a cabin with bedrooms or a loft that can sleep up to 10 people. Not only can you have more people stay than you could with a hotel room, but by using the cabins full kitchen , you can save a lot of money by preparing your own meals or sack lunches.
Where to Visit
If you have never been to Yellowstone, Old Faithful is essential on your list of stops. If you have visited before, there are still many other great places that you should check out , including fishing bridge, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with the upper and lower falls. If you like the thermal and geologic features, don’t miss the Norris Geyser Basin. For finding animals , one of the great places is the Hayden Valley.
What to do
There are many activities inside Yellowstone. Depending on what you like , you might consider hiking on the hundreds of miles of available trails. You can go fishing in some of the over 220 lakes that contain over 107,000 acres of water. You can wade in the over 1,000 streams totaling 2,650 miles of running water. Be sure to check the latest fishing regulations before you plan your fishing outing .
If you like wildlife, you can look for the famous Grizzly bears, or try and spot the newly re-built packs of Yellowstone Wolves. In addition to these, keep your eyes open for moose, elk, deer, buffalo, eagles, osprey, pelicans, otters, and many other animals.
One of the favorite activities is swimming in the firehole river. There is an area set aside that anyone can swim in, and for the more adventurous there is cliff diving . The swimming area requires a short walk from the parking area , and can be difficult for people of have a hard time walking. Be sure to check for road or facility closures before planning your swimming outing.
Activities outside the Park
When you visit Yellowstone, remember there are many things to do outside the park. These can include horsback rides, chuckwagon dinners, rodeos, rafting, and guided tours . Check out the cities near the park such as West Yellowstone and Jackson Hole for more options .
Planning a Garden Fish Pond
Sunday, May 30th, 2010It was very usual for all villages and farms to have a pond, it would certainly be different to what we now consider a pond to be. If you asked what people consider a garden pond is they would probably say a “small area of water filled with a couple of gold fish and possibly some water lilies”. A modern day pond is nothing like a village or farm pond was 100 years ago. A pond was crucial on farms and places where people lived. Pond water was used by both animals and people. When piped water became available many of ponds were filled in or ignored. This article gives information about planning a garden pond. With current land shortages and with the effects of pollution the natural environment of pond life is diminishing. To assist the environment and nature and for personal enjoyment many people build garden ponds.
This article can help you with the planning stage. The planning part of pond building is the most significant thing that you need to do. Its well worth the investment in time to get it right. If you have an image of what the finished pond should look like then its worth drawing this on a piece of paper. The location is the most important factor, hopefully you will have a selection of where to make your pond. The location of the pond should not be exposed to direct sunlight for more than five hours per day. Of course if your home does not provide shelter from the sun from buildings, tree, fences etc then you will need to improvise with some bush planting. In countries that are cooler then the amount of direct sunshine exposed to the pond tends to get slightly less important. The pond should if possible be seen easily from your home as it will hopefully immediately grab your attention when you go out into your back garden.
A biological balance is more stable in larger ponds, and therfore much easier when maintaining a garden pond, the size is calculated from water volume. The depth of the water can be increased to help accomplish greater water volume. The size is dependant on how many and what size of fish you intend to stock it with. The pond needs to be deep enough not to totally freeze during winter so if you live in colder climates prepare for this when planning the depth of the pond. Fish spend quite a lot of time in the deeper areas of ponds during summer and winter. It is a good idea to work out the actual water volume during the planning stage. Knowing the precise water volume will enable the pond keeper to correctly add water, plant and fish additives.
If you want to appeal to wildlife like frogs and newts to your pond you will have to build it at ground level. Make sure other animals can get out of the pond so either plan a shallow area that will enable any unfortunate animal to swim to and climb out of the pond or leave a plank of wood half submerged in the water and the other end onto of any pond surrounding, this should act as an escape root. A well planned, designed pond will have three regions, a shallow, middle and deeper regions. This is ideal if goes around the whole perimeter but this is often not practical for example if you want to create a waterfall. Where possible try and make the size of the shallow area about 20% of the total surface area of the pond. An ideal way of achieving this is to feature a tier in the pond. If you plan to have a good selection of pond plants then you will need to create different depths in your pond. The final area will be in between the shallow and deep areas, the fish will spend a lot of time during summer months and should be deep enough to allow free swimming. The final area is the deeper region and should be around 40% of the surface area of the pond. Think about the final shape, a natural looking pond will not have straight edges so a circular or oval shape will look good. It is thought that fish favour a rounded shape rather than a square shape, but there is very little evidence to support this opinion. The circle or oval shape will be the cheapest shape to make.
If you have children please ensure that you have a pond surround.
Freshwater Tropical Fish Aquarium – Setup
Sunday, May 30th, 2010Freshwater fish tanks are more manageable than saltwater fish tanks. To brighten up your freshwater tropical fish aquarium, you can add some plant life to accompany the fish.
You have several choice and a wide variety of prices in selecting your freshwater fish tanks. Freshwater fish tanks comes in a variety of different sizes ranging from 10 gallons to 60 gallons. Glass freshwater fish tanks weigh a lot more than the acrylic ones, so it is necessary to cater for this and provide the extra space that is needed.
You will need to install pumps, a water filter, an inlet and outlet that all combine to create an optimal environment for the fish. Be certain that there is sufficient circulation of water in the fish tank. The filtration system keeps the water in the tank balanced. It is not necessary to clean the freshwater tropical fish aquarium very often, and you can always replace the old water with normal fresh water.
An important decision you need to make is choosing the proper filtration system. You have three different types of filtration systems to pick from. They are chemical, biological, and mechanical systems. To get rid of the particulate matter in your fish tank the mechanical systems will take care of this. Operating like biological filters.
It is critical that chemicals like ammonia are removed from your freshwater tropical fish aquarium.
You can decorate the freshwater tropical fish aquarium with plants to create a more natural environment, and one that is conducive to the fish. Plants also make the aquarium look more attractive. There are several plants you can pick from such as, Umbrella Plant, Java Fern, Amazon Sword, and Argentine Sword.
Assemble everything you need in your freshwater tropical fish aquarium and then check to see that everything is in proper working order.

Fishing In Northwest Montana
Sunday, May 30th, 2010Fishing in Montana is much like fishing anywhere in North America, other than the fact that the scenery is probably as good as it gets. Oh, I’m sure you could find various areas throughout North America that would offer beauty that would rival Northwest Montana, but I seriously doubt it would be better. And the trout fishing is as good as I’ve seen anywhere. There are some very large trout in the state of Montana.
I personally live within ten miles of Flathead Lake. Flathead Lake is easily one of the best lake trout fisheries in the country. The guides and locals in the area regularly catch twenty to thirty pound lake trout. Between the lake trout in Flathead Lake and the rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout in the rivers flowing through Northwest Montana, this area is truly a trout paradise.
In fact, if a person ventures over to a little town called Libby and the Kootenai River that flows within miles of the town, and goes into any gas station along the river, they will see pictures of truly unreal Rainbow Trout that have been caught. I’m talking about Rainbows in the twenty-pound class. Yes, I said twenty-pound class! The first time that I witnessed these pictures, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I honestly thought I was looking at Steelhead. But everyone assured me that they were Rainbows, caught out of the Kootenai, below the dam. When I checked the area directly below the dam, it looked like an area you would see in upstate New York where big Steelhead or Salmon could be found. Old salmon eggs everywhere and old line that was heavy enough to land……. well a twenty plus pound raibow! It’s quite a scene, but then so is a rainbow trout that big!
There’s also some decent pike and largemouth bass fishing in the area. There’s also quite a nice population of Lake Superior Whitefish in Flathead Lake. They run from one to five pounds and are delicious. And, in all honesty, they’re fairly easy to catch. Once a person gets the hang of the little nuances, it’s simple in fact.
So all in all fishing opportunities are quite abundant in Northwest Montana. The biggest drawback is that you only get about six months to enjoy them. The rest of the time it’s too cold for all but the heartiest of anglers to spend much time chasing fish. And when it’s not too cold to fish, the run-off kills another three or four months.
There are definitely ice fishing opportunities, but let’s be honest about it. Does anyone really enjoy ice fishing? Sure the actual act of catching fish is fun, but I find the lead up to fish while ice fishing to be, well, painful (or at least just a pain in the butt). But yes, for those of you who actually know what you’re doing or have the inclination, there are plenty of opportunities to sit on the ice and stare through an eight-inch hole. Errrrrr…….. Spend some time ice fishing.
All in all, fishing in Montana, at least Northwest Montana, is pretty much as good as you’ll find anywhere in North America, and the trout fishing is better. So if you have some time to kill, and like to spend your spare time fishing, Montana is not at all a bad idea.
